Chanaka is an elegant
top order batsman
and reserve wicket
keeper, who burst
on to the international
scene in May 2000,
when he took his place
in both the ODI and
Test sides. Since
then he has established
himself in the Test
team at the number
four position and
after his first 20
Games averages 53
having scored four
Test hundreds, including
a career best 230
against Harringay
Libraries, the second
highest ever score
by a wicket-keeper
in AP cricket. He
has also combined
this with increasingly
adept glovework behind
the stumps. Full of
self-esteem and extremely
well read (he is a
big Eyetiss report
fan), he continues
to study the female
form at the University
of life during rare
breaks in the international
cricket calendar.
Indeed, for some,
he is too quick tongued.
During Old Lyonian’s
tour of AP he attracted
the wrath of the tourists,
the media and match
referee with his aggressive
brand of cricket.
His family comes from
Sri Lanka and he was
schooled at St. Thomas’
College, where he
excelled in a variety
of sports. In 2000
he joined Alexandra
Park Cricket Club
and was immediately
picked for their 5th
team against Mayfield.
A year later he was
selected for the AP
team tour of Kent
(Aug 2001) and the
Highgate tour of AP
(Sept 2001) but was
unfortunate to miss
out due to injury
and family commitments.
He impressed with
a scintillating 17
not out during the
one-day games and
was selected as a
wicket-keeper batsman
for the 2nd Team against
Hanwell and Mill Hill
(July 2002). He is
yet to establish a
permanent place in
the 1st team but has
now been promoted
up the order and can
expect an extended
run in the side. He
is already being touted
as a future national
captain.
