4th & 5th August Match Reports

Sat. 4th August 2007

1st XI   Perivale P 134 all out          AP 138-3                                             Won (30pts)
Playing the side who were the only team to have beaten us soundly this year we were relatively confident with a strong side out. We won another toss and despite the heat thought we’d field as the wind was up and we decided that might be a bit in the wicket early doors. So it proved as Ant bowled superbly picking up an early wicket and deserving more by the time he finished his opening spell with figures of 8/12/1. Nige picked up 2 early wickets himself including the number 4 first ball (he only lasted 2 in the first game but had scored 6 by then!). They then produced there one significant partnership of the match with two of there middle order certainly believing that attack was the best form of defence. Unfortunately we missed two relatively easy chances but fortunately they didn’t make it count on this occasion and both batsmen fell soon after their respective dropped catches. Tariq made a quick getaway at 7 down to retrieve the second new ball from home and left your correspondent in charge. I managed to resist any bowling changes, despite the temptation of introducing the Ali and Stu show to the opposition, and Nige finished things off in style ending with 6 wickets.
In reply we got off to a flyer despite losing one early wicket. Ali and Sandy belted the ball to all parts and helped by extras saw the score up to 70 odd before Sandy managed to continue his run of finding unusual dismissals this time being caught off a full toss using the back of his bat. Taz carried on where he’d left off and we only lost one more wicket as I tried to finish things off in style (or lack of!).
A good result and once again showing what we can do when we have a near full team out. Availability still needs to be improved on looking at this week particularly to help the 2’s move up the table. After the last two the pleasant completed games it was a shame the opposition didn’t make this a day to remember. It was back to the usual verbals. Particularly strange coming from a team who were getting smashed off the park!

Cockfosters 131 all out       AP 133-2                                             Won (4pts)
AP maintain their top of the table position in the Sunday league with a solid team display at Chalk Lane. On a warm day, the home side won the toss and batted. They were soon regretting it. A run out started the rot, followed by three wickets for Manan Banker (3-29) at the church end. The skipper chipped in with two more (2-22) and Cockfosters were 29-6! Their number seven, Chris Stead, batted well, making 67, shepherding the tail and farming the strike sensibly. We just had to be patient. As Cockfosters struggled past 100, Tharic took a wicket with a vicious off break, then held a catch of his brother’s bowling. Amit Bose cleaned up in successive balls, having Stead caught at mid-off by Taz then removing the number 11’s off bail with a leg cutter.
A great effort in the heat. After tea, Chris Bennett and Jeremy Anderson smashed the bowling to all parts in a brutal opening stand of 87. Jez made 51. Chris kept going for 49*, hitting two successive fours to win the game with 20 overs to spare. Brad Townsend was 16*. A big thank you to Alan Drake for umpiring. An early finish meant several beers on the pavilion veranda in glorious sunshine. Next up – Brondesbury away (now home ed.).
