1st XI (82/0) vs Harrow (81)
Not a great advert for the Chess Valley League. We
arrived at the scenic Hayle’s Folly with
only 9 players, while the home side were a complete
shambles on and off the pitch. A nice bunch, but
it was a shock that such a well-appointed club
should provide such bad opposition and they will
get thrashed regularly in this division. As they
threw away their wickets with brainless batting,
I was keen to stress that we at least look like
a cricket team in contrast, which wasn’t
difficult. Their openers made a brisk start, but
Manan Banker then took two quick wickets with the
aid of diving catches: one by keeper Chris Fletcher
and then a smart c&b. At 45/2, skipper Nigel
Bagley then got to work taking 4/17, supported
by Tharic (2/17) who trapped the remaining opener
lbw, ending both his potentially destructive innings
and his (very irritating) running commentary on
the game, such as how well the bowlers were doing,
slagging off his batting partners etc. Faaric Mohammed
took two smart catches in the deep and Amit (2/8)
finished them off with successive deliveries. Jeremy
Anderson 44* and Fletch 31* knocked off the runs
in 15 overs before tea. Both were dropped early
on but made the home side pay. The highlight was
Jez’s six over the scorebox. An early finish
meant we could watch Harrow 2s vs Harpenden on
the main square.
